My KD-990 is running without its plinth, eg 'naked' with a Jelco SA-750E tonearm. The control switches are just in a little wooden box, but still attached to the main PCB by the various ribbon cables. The original Kenwood feet have been replaced with Stillpoints OEM.

Hi folks! My fabulous Kenwood KD-990 is making troubles! It does not start always when I hit the start-button. Giving the platter once a gentle push before hitting the start-button results in far too slow rotation, coming to a stop after a very slow turn. Otherwise perfectly fine condition.

There may be better arms, but by the time you have shoehorned one into the 990, it may not turn out to be worth it.

The Kenwood KD 990 is superb, one of their finest and one of the best DD tables of all time, I rank it in the top 15 DD of all time. Kenwood's best no holds barred DD offering was the L-07D (I rate that one as Top 10) (the KD 990 was next best, and this classic is superb).

The wooden exterior of the KD 990 is veneer with a slightly subtle wooden touch in black. The KD 7010 has been painted black. For what’s it worth, I also noticed some minor differences on the board with the electronics, some chips are different. However the tonearms, the base, wiring etc. are exactly the same. Both perform the same.
