This is what I, as a doctoral candidate, set out to do, focusing on the fifteenth century. Over 200 fifteenth-centuryt effigies survive, but only around ten were generally known in the armour community.

Sir Henry Percy KG (20 May 1364 - 21 July 1403), nicknamed Hotspur or Harry Hotspur, was an English knight who fought in several campaigns against the Scots in the northern border and against the French during the Hundred Years' War. The nickname "Hotspur" was given to him by the Scots as a tribute to his speed in advance and readiness to attack.

Medieval Helmets. Helmets which were an important component of military equipment already in the Bronze Age went through some modifications in the Medieval Times. The knights wore the mail armor until the 14th century, while the head was usually covered with mail hood over which was worn a separate helmet - either the Spangenhelm or Ridge Helmet.

In the 1200s English knights were involved in many wars, including struggles against the French, Welsh and Scots. They were also involved in civil wars, such as the two Barons' Wars of 1216-7 and 1264-7. In the 13th century, all-enclosing helms - known as 'great helms' - became popular. These helmets often featured a single slit.

With a heavy blade one metre in length, a 'great sword' had to be held with both hands and was remarkably stable in design from the 11th to 15th century CE. A mounted knight wielding a lance was a fearsome enough sight but a dismounted one swinging a sword that could sever limbs with one blow was an awesome psychological weapon in itself.

Knighthood finds origins in the ancient Greek hippeis (ἱππεῖς) and Roman equites.. In the Early Middle Ages in Europe, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors.
